IPL Photorejuvenation

IPL Photorejuvenation with Levulan

IPL (intense pulsed light) Photorejuvenation with Levulan is a two-step treatment designed to treat acne on the face. Depending on the number of conditions to be treated and the severity of each, a series of six treatment sessions or more may be recommended.

In the first part of the treatment, Levulan Topical Solution application is applied for the first half hour, then IPL procedure, which continues to perfect it. Lumenis delivers a special range of wavelengths of light in customizable pulses through a sapphire tip gently into your skin. The light is absorbed through the dermis to the acne oil gland, drying the glands out, giving the skin a renewed and more youthful appearance.

Definitions and Conditions for IPL

Rosacea - facial redness across the nose, cheeks, chin, forehead, visibly dilated blood vessels and/or red inflammatory papules

Erythema of Rosacea - simple inflammatory redness of skin

Telangiectasia - small dilated or broken segments of a blood vessel visible through epidermis, in simple, arborized, spider or popular shape

Poikiloderma - combination of telangiectasia, pigmented lesions, and atrophy resulting from over-exposure to sun. Mainly on neck and chest

Hyper pigmentation - patches of skin become darker then surrounding skin

Melasma - diffuse hyper pigmentation that appears as a result of hormonal changes (pregnancy, oral contraceptive) mainly on the cheeks and forehead

Photoaging - Age Spots/Telangiectasia (mild) - characteristics of early to moderate photo aging include actinic lentigines, textural changes, elevated palpable but not visible keratoses, and mild telangiectasia, usually in patients in the 30's and 40's

Photoaging - Age Spots/Telangiectasia (severe) - characteristics of advanced to severe photo aging include obvious dyschromias and telangiectasias, visibly raised keratoses and more pronounced textural changes, usually in patients over 50 years old

Non-Facial Photoaging - Age Spots/Telangiectasia - textural, vascular and pigmentation changes of neck, chest or hands

Definitions of Conditions (Epidermal - Dermal)

EPIDERMAL

Lentigo - small round-oval dark macules sun related (solar) or non-related (simplex), increase in number and size with age

Keratosis - epidermal cells proliferation with pigmentation and with or without hyperkeratosis. Smooth to verrucous plaques

Caf-Au-Lait Macules - usually one light brown smooth large patch (1 - 20 cm diameter)

DERMAL - EPIDERMAL

Hemosiderin - pigmented depositions of hemoglobin metabolite as a result of extravasations of blood through damaged vessels. Often a postsclerotherapy event

Becker's Nevus - brown large patches (2 - 4 cm diameter) over thickened dermis, often with coarse hair

Melasma - diffuse hyper pigmentation that appears as a result of hormonal changes mainly on the face

Hyper pigmentation - patches of skin become darker than surrounding skin, often as post inflammatory process

DERMAL

Nevi of Ota/Ito - dermal blue-gray discolorations. Unilateral on face (Ota) or on shoulders and upper arms (Ito), common among Asians

Definitions and Conditions - Vascular

ACQUIRED

Telangiectasia - small dilated or broken segments of blood vessel visable through epidermis, in simple, arborized, spider or popular shape. May be hereditary, part of a disease (poikiloderma), secondary to a disease (lupus), or by physical damage (radiotherapy)

Red Scars - in the process of wound healing there is an excessive growth of blood vessels under the scar which serve no purpose following the complete healing

CONGENITAL

PWS (Port Wine Stain) - malformation of the dermal capillaries (60% are in the upper 0.6 mm). Present at birth, grow with the individual. Dilated vessels (ectasia) in the middle and deep reticular dermis may appear in adults. Mainly on the face and neck.

Hemangioma - vascular benign tumors that enlarge by rapid cell proliferation. High incidence at infancy, rapid growth phase spontaneous involution. Overlying skin may have a fine network of telangiectasias. May be superficial (capillary) or deep (cavernous) or both. 60% occur in head and neck, 25% on trunk and 14% on the extremities.
